The following is notice of the final report on the contamination cleanup that has been ongoing since June 2000 in the area occupying approximately 130 acres north of Broadway Boulevard and immediately west of the Pantano Wash. In the 1960's and early 1970's, this area was used as a municipal landfill. Contamination from this landfill polluted the ground water and a plume of contaminated water spread to the west.

everal wells west of that area, which includes the ElGheko neighborhood, were shut down beginning in 1991 because tetrachloroethene (PCE) was detected in the water.

Remedial action by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has reduced the size of the contaminated plume dramatically.

The final report on the remedial action is available as described in the notice below.

FINAL REMEDIAL INVESTIGATION (RI) REPORT LANDFILL OPERABLE UNIT


The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has completed the final remedial investigation (RI) report for the Broadway Pantano Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) site Landfill Operable Unit in Tucson, Arizona (Arizona Administrative Code R 18-16-406 J). An RI is conducted to document the nature and extent of the contamination and the sources thereof; identify current and potential impacts to public health, welfare, and the environment; identify current and reasonably foreseeable uses of land and waters of the state; and obtain and evaluate any other information necessary for identification and comparison of alternative remedial actions.

The final RI report includes the final remedial objectives report and responsiveness summaries regarding comments, issues and concerns raised during the community involvement process.\r\n\r\nThe Broadway Pantano WQARF site consists of plumes located in Tucson. The plumes are bounded approximately by Speedway Boulevard to the north, Calle Madero to the south (south of Broadway Boulevard), Pantano Wash to the east, and Craycroft Road to the west. Contaminants of concern at the site are tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, vinyl chloride, methylene chloride, cis-1,2-dichloroethene, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and lead.
